How it should be

Saturday 14th May 2022

Loch Lunndaidh was on fire today.

Booked the boat at Lindsays and arrived at the loch about 1030am.

The day was mild, 13⁰C with a constant breeze blowing towards the dam.

Fishing with another angler , we headed straight to the far end of the loch as the wind was blowing steadily towards the sea.

Rod set ups - for myself 10ft Vision Onki 7wt with an airflo superflo mini tip and a team of two dabblers.

Second set up 10ft Airflo Airlite 6/7wt with a hardy taper series intermediate and a team of two flies, a green dabbler on the bob and a black pennel variant on the point.

We started the first drift from the burn inlet at the far end of the loch along the northern Bank.

Within minutes my boat partner had caught a fish on his point fly. I had tap after tap at the flies. The fish were there. You know when you just .... know... its going to be a good day?

By the time we had drifted to the middle of the bay, it was clear the fish were ON. Fish were rising in the perfectly sized waves right across the top end of the loch and on one drift l, we hit perfect conditions, with fish after fish coming to the boat and every cast was laid out with eager anticipation.

The black pennell variant in particular was doing very well, as were the dabblers.

Blackn pennell variant.

Body is hareline ice dub in black peackock, with a pearl mylar rib. The fly has a beautiful pearlescent green sheen (similar to peacock herl) when wet.

The wind picked up considerably after lunch, so after fishing down to the narrows we scooted back to the far end of the loch.

Normally I'd try to keep the boat bearish to the shores when drift fishing, but to my surprise the fish were hitting right out in the middle of the loch and some were hitting HARD.

By the end of the day we had over 30 fish between us ( honestly we lost count) with only a couple of tiddlers and the vast majority between 1/2 lb and 1lb.

No big fish caught , but the ones we had fought like angry tigers from the time they were hooked until they hit the net.
